The Pros and Cons of Being A Beauty (Or Any Other Kind Of) Blogger

by - Friday, August 17, 2018

Being a beauty blogger is a  wonderful opportunity to talk about the products you like and to read some other recommendations from other bloggers as well, and so many wonderful friendships have been made through beauty blogging, however, it does have its pros and its cons. These pros and cons don't just apply to beauty bloggers, though; they apply to every type of blogger, whether you are a fashion blogger or lifestyle blogger.

The Pros:

  • It can be a viable career-It will take years of hard work, but being a beauty blogger could potentially be a career today, which would have never been possible about 10 years ago.
  • You can gush about your favorite products-Having your own blog means you can write about anything, even what products you like, don't like, what you use daily, your favorite nude/red/bold lipsticks, etc. etc. The possibilities are endless.
  • Making friends-Being a beauty blogger means that you have the chance to meet a lot of amazing bloggers and form networks.
  • Creating a blog is affordable-If you use Blogger, which is Google's in-house blog creator, it's completely free and customizable and a domain name on Google Domains costs $13 per year.
  • Anyone can do it- whether or not you are a student, whether you have a full-time job or career already, or even if you're at home with kids, anyone can start a blog.
Cons:
  • Inspiration vs Copying-It can be so easy to copy someone's work without meaning to, and the rarer case is that someone copies your blog completely-as in, they copy and paste your posts word-for-word. This can pose a problem because it's your work and this person is not representing you.
  • Drama-Of course, with anything on the internet, there is always drama. Sometimes it involves brands, sometimes it involves other bloggers, but there's always some sort of fight going on.
  • It can get very expensive- I don't mean on the blog side. You have to buy makeup and skincare products if you're a beauty blogger, clothes if you're a fashion blogger, and don't forget the camera and other expensive equipment.
  • Slow growing-it can take years for someone to grow their blog to the point where they can turn that into their full-time job. This is a big reason why people abandon their blogs- they either didn't get the views they had hoped for or they realized the hard way that it's difficult to get paid.
  • Not everyone is successful-I've seen my fair share of abandoned blogs, and there are a number of reasons why people abandon their blogs- whether it's their job being too hectic, they weren't happy with the number of views they were getting, or even losing complete interest in blogging.
Anyone can be a blogger because it's quite affordable, but you have to make sure that you can stick with blogging for a long time. Don't force yourself to do something you don't enjoy because you think it's an easy way to make money, but it's not. Blogging really is a fun hobby for me, but I know it will take me years before I can even make a decent profit for it; maybe I won't get paid at all for blogging, but I'll still blog because I enjoy it.
