Four Questions You Should Ask Yourself Before Purchasing Something

There are some things you should ask yourself before you buy that new Zara coat or that new pair of shoes from ASOS and these are questions I learned to ask myself over the past ten months.

Does it go well with my closet?
If you are considering buying an item of clothing, ask yourself if it will go with your closet. That bright red coat won't go well if all you wear is your black and tan coats, and those 6-inch heels won't go well in your closet if all you ever wear are flats and low heels.

Will I use it more than once? or Will I wear it every year/season?
The most important question is will you use it more than once, or will you wear it every season/year? Now I know that jackets are a difficult thing because you can only wear them when it's cold, but for other things like sweaters or other pieces of clothing, it's important to consider whether or not you'll wear it more than once a year. For me, I stock up on a lot of fragrances, body washes, body lotions and creams, and scrubs because these are items I use often (thanks to how much I tend to sweat in certain areas of my body and thus need some extra protection but also the skin on my body is ironically dry), but I barely buy any clothes these days because I am still in school and have a good selection of work clothes in case I land an internship or a co-op opportunity, as well as plenty of clothes for days I have class.

Do I really want it?
If you think you really want something, put it in your cart and walk away for a few days or a week. More often than not, you'll find that you just wanted to spend some money because of some stressor like a bad work day or a low grade on that essay you worked really hard on. If you still want that item, then you can go ahead and buy it.

Is there another area I should invest in?
If you have a ton of makeup but have very little work clothes, maybe invest the money you would have spent in makeup to go towards your closet. If you have a well-curated closet but your laptop is about to just croak, maybe invest in a new laptop instead of buying those two new trench coats. Investing in another area you know you need to will lower your chances of buying something unnecessary.
