Let's Have A Chatter: Why Is Mental Health An Important Topic?

by - Wednesday, September 19, 2018

One thing that all public figures seem to avoid talking about is mental health. However, mental health is being talked about more on Twitter, which is a good thing.

(also, a quick little content warning for suicide, so if you are triggered by that, you can poke around at the other posts on my blog)

Why is mental health an important topic?
Let's start with the month of September, this month. September is recognized as being National Suicide Prevention Month and September 10-17 is National Suicide Prevention Week with September 10 being National Suicide Prevention Day.

Now you might be wondering, what does mental health have to do with suicide? It has a lot to do with suicide actually. 1 in every 5 adults has been diagnosed with a mental disorder, with some of the most commonly diagnosed disorders being depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder.

Many people who are suicidal either have depression by itself or another mental illness with depression and many people who are diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) also exhibit suicidal behaviors.

There are treatment options available for mental illness, such as doctors and therapists, but more often than not, most people either cannot afford to see a doctor or therapist or there are no nearby therapists or doctors.

How can we help?
There are several ways you can reach out. One of them is asking one of these questions:

  • Are you okay?
  • Do you feel like hurting yourself?
  • Do you wish you could disappear?
There are several more questions you could ask. You can also check in on friends, and it doesn't have to be texts every day. It can be that quick peek on their Facebook profile or Snapchat. It can be that message sent over Facebook Messenger. Just make sure your friends are doing well.

Why is it important to me?
Long story short: I come from a very large family, and in October of last year, one of my cousins committed suicide at the tender young age of 17 and it made me realize how frighteningly easy it is to hide mental illness and suicidal thoughts.
