What is a Want and What is a Need?

When it comes to shopping, we have wants and we have needs. These two categories are very different from each other, and more often than not, needs outweigh our wants.

What is a want?
A want is something that you would like to have, but you don't really need. Some wants include:

  • The latest iPhone or Android phone
  • Tablets
  • Books
  • TVs
  • Netflix
  • Additional clothes other than the basics
  • Fancy desserts and fancy food
  • Takeout
What is a need?
A need is something that you cannot live without. Needs are also things you would be arrested/fined for if you go without them, or you wouldn't be able to do basic things like getting a job. Some needs include:
  • Food (fruits. meats, veggies, vitamins and minerals)
  • Clothes (shirts, pants, shoes, underwear)
  • Medicine
  • Contacts or glasses
  • Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, perfume, body wash, body cream or lotion)
  • Internet (because everything is done online these days)
What is the difference between a want and a need?
A want is something that you don't need to survive, while a need is something that you cannot be without. A need is something like internet-you need the internet to do practically everything from applying to jobs and school to searching for important things. The difference between wants and needs is that wanting something doesn't mean you'll be deprived of something if you don't have it-for example, you won't be deprived of a job if you don't buy those fancy new $500 loafers when your old pair are still perfectly functional and just a little bit beat up. A need is something that will prove to be detrimental if you don't have it-nobody can survive without food or water, and nobody can get anything done without the internet.

There are different wants and needs we have in life, but we can save money on determining what we really need and what are just things we want.
