Why I’m Shopping Less and Why It’s Important

by - Friday, January 03, 2020

As a blogger, it's important (aka imperative) that most bloggers shop frequently for new items to feature on their blogs. However, it's not that simple, and because of this, makeup companies are pushing out releases like nobody's business and it's recently come to light to me how damaging consumerism can be to the planet, and why we should be a little more sustainable.

It's costly
Shopping is costly, everyone knows that, but it can also lead to shopping addictions, where people feel like they need to have something new to show off on their blogs or Youtube channels and that can lead to so much debt. It's not financially sustainable whatsoever.

It's not environmentally friendly
I love getting packages as much as the next blogger, but there is so much plastic packaging that comes in these packages-for product protection, for show, and to be honest, it's wasteful and I feel bad every time I order something online because it's usually packaged in protective bags filled with air.

Now here is where I'm trying to save money...

Shop during sales/when I have coupons
Shopping when there's a sale going on or when I have coupons is a great way to save money, especially when I need something. Where I work is dangerous because they have a lot of cute things, so I almost exclusively shop when I get rewarded with a 20% off coupon, discount days where we get 20% off instead of our usual 10%, or if it's not a discount day, I wait until I really want the item.

Shopping in person instead of ordering online
I rediscovered the joy of shopping in person instead of ordering stuff online, and it's so much better because in-store, they have things that might not even be online, and it's less wasteful because you can opt out of carrying one of those plastic bags they give you.

Make a list of wants v needs
I shop for the things I need the most, and then move on to the things I want as it helps me save money, and it curbs my shopping tendencies.

Are you trying to curb your shopping?

  1. Lovely post, Winnie! I’m trying to shop less, and although I feel pressure through blogging to always have new things I’ve realised that I can talk about other topics. I have cotton bags that I take out with me, to avoid having to buy the plastic ones. Also like you, I’ve been mostly just buying things I need, and keeping to a budget. Thanks for sharing your thoughts/ideas! :-) xx
